Shift Exercise App
January 2021 - March 2021
Problem: Make an app for people who want to exercise more, but for various reasons, don’t get around to it.
My Role: This was my first UX project earning a certificate with the Interaction Design Foundation. With this project I learned to develop a research study, empathize, ideate, sketch wireframes, and create high fidelity mock ups. This is a simplified process in comparison to what I learned later with the Google UX Design Certificate.
User Research
This project started with user research with a mix of five friends and family wanting to discover more about why they are not exercising as much as they want to. I had the participants keep a week long diary. I conducted an initial and follow up interview over Zoom.

User Data
I placed the data on a spreadsheet to organize it in one place. The pictures and diary were very compelling and provided a lot of insight into why the users were choosing to not exercise that would be difficult to gather with a moderated study that only consisted of an interview.
User Solutions
The pain points that would be addressed with this app are:
1. Creating a feature to sync up all health apps.
2. Have the app track when you miss a workout and suggest another time to do so based on your habits and schedule.
3. Provide a reminder as often as the user needs to recommend getting back on track to take into consideration the different challenges the user may experience with different life cycles.

Paper Wireframes
I sketched out some ideas to address the user paint points identified on paper. This being my first project, I liked how drawing on paper was a quick and easy way to get some ideas out and the purpose of some of the screens.
High Fidelity Mock Ups
I created mockups in Figma to get an idea of some design colors and typography for this app quickly. I used bright and cheery colors with plenty of white space for easy legibility of information.

Takeaways
What I Learned:
This case study showed how quickly solutions can be developed as long as in depth research is completed. This project gave me the chance to conduct a longer research study that I really enjoyed. I like the challenge of using different research methodologies depending on the goals of the case study.
